The Village of Biscayne Park was incorporated on December 31, 1931, however, both visitors and potential residents should know that this community is a mostly residential area. Of course, there are a few businesses tucked here and there that offer services ranging from vacation rentals to construction and repairs. However, one local landmark stands out above everything else and is a must see for anyone who plans to visit the area: The Biscayne Historic Log Cabin.
In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration built a log cabin intended to serve as the center of village's daily operations. While the government provided men for the labor and contractors for oversight, individual donations from community residents enabled the completion of this building. These donations are just one of the many reasons that residents of the village are so attached to the log cabin.
On January 24, 1935, the complete log cabin was given to the village in a special ceremony. For the next seventy some odd years, this structure was used for everything from police headquarters to government offices. Changes were made to accommodate the growth in the village from an initial 113 citizens to its now over 3,000 residents. Additions and renovations were necessary but also detracted from the building's original condition. Nevertheless, the residents considered their log cabin as the most important symbol of their village.
Upon seeing that they had outgrown the space, village officials asked the state government to help them build a new village hall. Once that project was successfully completed in 2014, the village turned its attention to the local landmark that had served so faithfully over the years. Hours of hard work went into turning back the clock and restoring the log cabin to its original condition. Although the interior has a wood floor and wooden log walls, the citizens can enjoy the modern amenities of comfortable chairs, a speaker system, and a flat-screen television. Exactly eighty years to the day after the first dedication, residents of Biscayne Park celebrated the reopening of their beloved landmark on January 24, 2016.
The village is a friendly place to live and visit. It offers quiet landscaped streets with parks to relax and play in. Residents can also participate in the many monthly events offered at the Burke Recreation Center. This facility offers everything from movie night to fund raisers. With two baseball fields; a soccer field; basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts, sports enthusiasts will never be bored. Regular yearly events such as Spring Fest, running and walking races as well as holiday parties and contests are held in this facility. Community sports teams are organized and enjoy a high rate of participation.
Resident participation in all village events and activities is highly encouraged and regularly acknowledged in the monthly village news letters. Issues ranging from recent meetings to expected improvements to problems in need of solving are discussed in this handy reference that exists to keep everyone informed.
With such a proud history behind it, the village of Biscayne Park and its residents should be proud of their efforts to both preserve and use a beloved local landmark. As the centerpiece of their village, this one structure will serve to keep both residents and visitors coming back year after year.
